This yummy desert is a Passover classic in my family (and a hit all year round!). Super simple, super delicious!

2 packages mandel bread crushed to crumbs

3 tbsp melted butter or margarine

6 whole eggs

3 egg yolks

1/2 cups lemon juice

lemon rind of 1 lemon

1/2 cups sugar

3 egg whites

3 tbsp sugar

4 egg whites

3 tbsp sugar

Mix the bread crumbs into the melted butter.

Pat the crumbs into a 9 inch spring form pan.

Combine the 6 whole eggs and the 3 egg yolks in a double boiler – beat eggs and add all the lemon juice, the rind and 1/2 cup of sugar.

Cook till thick, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

In a separate bowl, beat 3 egg whites with 3 tbsp sugar until stiff.

Fold into the cooled lemon mixture.

Spread the lemon filling over the bread crumbs in pan and freeze.

In another bowl, beat 4 egg whites with 3 tbsp sugar until stiff.

Spoon over lemon mixture.

Broil until meringue is golden, about 3 minutes.

Refreeze until ready to serve.

Easter Bunny Search!!

Easter is almost here! And this year, in order to make our Easter baskets extra special, we’ve hired a rather illustrious consultant. Mr. E. Bunny has been helping us out around the shop, making sure our baskets are Easter ready!

He’s notoriously hard to spot, but we’ve done our best to snap a few quick pics of him. Can you help us find him in our photos?

Kids Easter Contest:

Each day we will post one photo in which E. Bunny is trying to hide.

To enter the contest, help your child comment on the photo and tell us where the cheeky bunny is hiding.

Every day, one child will win a fun Easter basket, designed by Mr. E. Bunny himself.

The contest will run from April 2nd to April 6th inclusively.

N.B. Don’t forget to use a valid email address, so we can get in touch with you when you win.

Gift Baskets Montreal – Spring has Sprung!

Winter is O.V.E.R!!!

The air is full of sunshine and good vibes. Happy times are here, my friends!

Crabapple Blossoms

I think spring may be my favourite time of year. Everything is palpably saturated in potential. Around us, nature is about to explode in a massive outpouring of stored energy. Even we humans can feel ourselves burgeoning with potential energy, itching to improve our lives. I can say with absolute certainty that spring is the only time of year that I actually WANT to get down on my hands and knees and scrub the living daylights out of my apartment. (I can’t wait to get home!!!)

Let’s all make some new new-years resolutions! Ones that are based on positive motivations (ie: I’m going to learn salsa!) rather than negative fixations (ie: I’m so fat, I’m going to lose weight…).

Hibernation is a thing of the past, it’s time to get 2012 going! This is going to be a great year :)

Gift Baskets Montreal – Get Your Purim On!

Famed weather predicting groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, was right… we hadn’t seen the last of winter. Like that annoying house guest who’s overstayed their welcome, we have no choice but to wait until Summer’s evil twin has packed its frosty bags and left for good.

But while we’re waiting, why not eat, drink and be merry!?!

The Jewish holiday Purim (aka: a huge party!) is right around the corner, so let’s all take full advantage! Costumes, colourful masks and lavish feasts make Purim just the thing to wipe away those winter woes.

Purim costume party
Never fear! Hamantaschen man is here!

There are several traditions associated with Purim (the photo above highlights two!) Costume parties are a ridiculously fun part of the celebration. It’s like a second Halloween! My favourite holiday comes twice a year, and I didn’t even know!

Another great part of the holiday is the food. Hamantaschen cookies are a traditional Purim delight. Every family has their own secret recipe, but they are generally a shell of cookie dough filled with poppy seeds, date, nuts, etc, etc… The combinations are endless (and delicious!)

Oy! The things I’ve been missing as a Goy!

At Purim, it’s traditional to show your love for your fellow man by  donating to charities (Mattanot La-Evyonim) and giving gifts to the people in your life (Mishloach Manot). We here at Pellatt Cornucopia Gifts have combined the two to make some super practical (and massively un-grammatical) Purim packages: Mattloach La-Manonim! Give some special Purim parcels to your loved ones, and we’ll give part of the proceeds to charity!

Two birds with one…hamantaschen?

Chag Purim Sameach tout le monde!

Gift Baskets Montreal – Taste the Waste

What’s smelly and black and yellow and gross all over? Overripe bananas. Yuck!

I currently have about a dozen black bananas in my freezer waiting to be turned into banana bread (they’re going to be waiting a loooong time)

Did you know that putting your bananas in the fridge will make them go bad faster? It makes sense if you think about it. Bananas are from a tropical environment – they probably don’t love the cold.

This kinda makes you wonder, are we overusing our fridges? We have a tendency to come home from the grocery store and unquestioningly shove all produce into the fridge. What other foods are we ruining with this refrigeration fixation? What are our food storage alternatives?

Designer Jihyun Ryou asked herself the very same question and put some massive research into finding the answers. Smarty pants that she is, she looked into how people stored food before they had fridges. She collected a bunch of interesting tricks from across the globe and transformed the ideas into gorgeous alternative food storage modules.

Check out her super cute designs and the science behind them here.

Gift Baskets Montreal – California Dreaming…

The Mamas and the Papas can keep the Golden State… All this snow bunny is dreaming of is a warm and cozy mug of hot chocolate!

Cozy times :)

Montreal’s winter wonderland is in full bloom! And though the weather outside may be frightful, we Quebecois are true blue Canadians! (blue, as in the colour of my toes at the moment) A few feet of snow and blowing freezing rain can’t keep a good woman down! Especially when a nice warm house is at the other end of her epic Odyssey-esque voyage.

They say the sweet isn’t as sweet without the sour… and today’s weather makes my oversized armchair, fleecy PJs and uber fuzzy blanket seem pretty darn sweet! And the hot chocolate… oh the hot chocolate!!! I’m sure that sunshine and palm trees are very nice, but I sincerely doubt that snowless societies can appreciate hot chocolate the way we do.

Check out this basket, specifically designed to add a healthy dose of Warm and Cozy to your day. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate – pick your poison : )

Tea basketIt’s as easy as 1-2-3!

1)Put on your comfiest clothes and fuzziest slippers

2)Serve piping hot beverage of choice in a super cute mug

3)Sit by window, smile and sip while watching snow fall

Life in Canada. Bring it on! on YouTube

Let it Snow : )
